VACLAV HAVEL'S VISIT TO MALTA
Poezijaplus wish to express both disappointment and apprehension to the way Vaclav Havel's visit to Malta was organised. In fact there was no mention of the President and writer's literary works and by all intents and purposes one would have desired to have him give a talk on his literary contributions. We are aware that Mr Havel's visit to Malta was hindered by the author's sickness, however we feel that the Czech President's visit to Malta failed to stir a real and honest enthusiasm. His visit was simply another political visit out of a series. We are not going to give any history lesson but everyone knows what Havel means to his homeland and to the twentieth century.
Malta once again missed the boat. What a pity!

POEZIJAPLUS CONDEMN THE ASSASSINATION OF PIM FORTUYN
Poezijaplus wish to condemn the assassination of the Dutch populist leader Pim Fortuyn early this week. Although the group distance itself from the political beliefs of the late political maverick, it cannot but raise an eyebrow to what has happened in the Netherlands only a week before legislative elections. In this regard the group call again for a more moderate approach to social issues, and usher for more democratic vision, especially where treads of xenophobism and racist behaviour is becoming more strenuous and dynamic. A move towards a true global world invites us all to invest our efforts to promote solidarity, tolerance and peace, whatever the religious and political belief, colour of the skin and gender. Having gained so much during in all fields during past fifty years of history, it would be senseless to reverse back the clock and repeat what has been considered the malaise of our time: War.

POEZIJAPLUS WELCOMES THE E.U. DESCISION REGARDING MALTESE
Still Poezijaplus feels that it is its duty to comment on the role of Maltese in the E.U. Poezijaplus welcomes the decision to have our national language treated on the same level as other member states languages. Malta should be proud of this. This is not just an historic moment but a time for us all to appreciate our own language. It is an irony that in Malta our own language is treated so badly from all quarters. This is another sign for those among us who see the language as an emblem of low class to change their attitudes.
Once more it had to be a foreign body to remind us that we although tiny we do have our own language.

POEZIJAPLUS AGAINST ANOTHER MAGHTAB IN THE SOUTH OF MALTA.
The literary group Poezijaplus is against a dunghill in the south of the island. The group can't understand why every drastic decision Malta's elected governments take always effects negatively the south. This project is absurd and inconceivable. The south already carries a negative stigma and with this project the injustice to the south will be added. The decision to open rubbish dung is completely wrong. The project involves several negative hazards which will mark forever the envoirement and our health.
Poezijaplus calls for a better and serious envoiremental policy. It is a gross irony that in Malta a phrase like envoiremental planning never was part of our vocabulary. We speak about it but it is never seriously discussed or put in practise. IIs it because Malta is a fertile land for big buzzwords?
The south demands more respect.

CONGRATULATIONS TO HE PEOPLE OF FRANCE, AND THE CZECH REPUBLIC
POEZIJAPLUS group would like to extend its congratulations to the people of the France and the Czech Republic for the recent parliamentary election results. In France the mainstream right won a huge victory giving Conservative President Jacques Chirac a stronghold for the next five years. In the case of France parliamentary elections proved a meagre turnout of 63 per cent, a record low for a legislative election. However the extreme-right National Front led by Jean-Marie Le Pen ended up obtaining no seats, while the devastating defeat for the French Left marked leftists' frustration for the rapid rise in crime and previous government impotence to implement its political agenda. This explains the low turnout to the ballots and the swing to the right, the latest tilt in a common direction across central and south of Europe. In the case of the Czech Republic the victory went to the centre-left Social Democrats led by Vladimir Spidla. In spite of this victory Spidla has several problems to solve before forming government as he already declared that his party is not ready to form a coalition with the Communists who finished third with 41 per cent of the seats. Political observers consider the country prepared for a generational change in a sense that has already showed signs of integration and the adoption of a free market economy, which has registered positive signs of progress. POEZIJAPLUS augur both countries prosperity invigorated by a sound democratic rule, which is the only guarantor of freedom.
